Just 10 years ago, an automatic driving license was exotic. Today, when most new cars are hybrids and electrics (which are always automatic), the dilemma "manual or automatic" is more current than ever. What to choose?
Driving License Category B (Classic) in Poland
You take the exam on a car with a manual gearbox (clutch + stick).
- Advantage: You can drive any passenger car – both manual and automatic.
- Disadvantage: Training is harder. You have to master hill starts, gear shifting, clutch work. This is exactly where exams in Poland often fail (engine stalling).
Category B Driving License with Code 78 (Automatic Only)
You take the exam on a car with an automatic gearbox.
- Advantage: The exam is much easier. The car won't stall. You don't have to think about gears. You focus only on the road. Starting uphill is a breeze.
- Disadvantage: You have code 78 entered in your driving license. You are not allowed to drive cars with a manual gearbox. If you get into a manual, it is treated as driving without entitlements.
Who is Automatic For?
- For people who want to pass quickly and stress-free. 50% of technical problems with car handling disappear.
- For those planning to drive only their own, modern car. If you buy a hybrid or electric, you don't need a manual.
- For people with motor coordination problems.
Who is Manual For?
- For automotive fans.
- For people who want full flexibility. E.g., a company car might be manual, a car borrowed from an uncle too.
- For those planning to work as a driver. In transport (buses, delivery vans), manual still dominates, although this is changing.
Can Code 78 Be Removed?
Yes! And this is the best news. If you get an automatic driving license, and after a year you decide that you need a manual after all:
- You don't have to do the whole course again.
- You only sign up for the practical exam with a manual.
- After passing the exam, you exchange the document and have full category B.
Verdict for 2025
The trend is clear: manuals are dying out. If you do not link your future with professional driving of older delivery vans, automatic is a great choice. You save stress and time. And if life ever forces you to manual – you will only pass the practical exam, already having experience in road traffic.
