Task No. 2 on the exam: "Driving in a lane forward and backward". Commonly: the arc. For many, this is the end of the exam before they even hit the city. And yet this task takes place in sterile conditions – no other cars, no pedestrians. How to master it?

What is this task about?

You have to drive through a designated lane forward, stop in the "envelope" (stopping area), and then reverse through the same lane to the starting point. Critical Rules:

  1. Do not drive over the line with a wheel (don't even touch it!).
  2. Do not hit a cone/pole.
  3. Stopping must be in the correct area (whole car inside).

"Method" vs "Feeling"

Instructors teach differently. Some say "turn when you see the cone in the mirror", others "watch how the car aligns". On the exam, under stress, "method" (reference points) are safer, but note – every car is different! If you learned on a Toyota Yaris and take the exam on a Hyundai i20, the points might be in a different place.

Therefore, the best method is observation + correction.

Step by Step Instructions (Reversing)

We assume you drove forward without problems (try to keep to the middle of the lane or slightly to the right to have space on the arc).

1. Starting Position

You are standing in the envelope. Straighten the wheels. Put it in reverse. Make sure your mirrors are adjusted so you see the rear wheels and lines on the asphalt.

2. Moving Off

Start slowly on the clutch alone. Look in the right mirror. Watch the distance of the car side from the right line.

3. Turning Moment

When your rear wheels (or B-pillar, depends on method) pass the first cone of the arc – start turning the steering wheel to the right.

  • How much? Usually 3/4 turn or one full turn (not all the way!).
  • Observation: Look in the right mirror. The car should "stick" to the right line, but not drive over it. Maintain a distance of approx. 30-50 cm.

4. Check in Left Mirror

When the car starts to turn, glance in the left mirror. You should see the left line and cones in it. If you see them too wide – turn more to the right. If too tight (right side is driving over) – straighten a bit to the left.

5. Straightening

When the car aligns parallel to the straight section of the lane (you see in mirrors that lines on both sides are parallel to the car side) – QUICKLY straighten the steering wheel.

6. Drive to the End

Reverse straight. Look alternately in left and right mirrors, correcting the track (minimal steering movements!). You must reverse to the starting envelope and stop without driving out back past the line (you will feel it or see the rear cone).

Key Advice

  • Turtle Speed: The slower you go, the more time you have to react. Half-clutch is specific foundation.
  • Don't be afraid to stop: If something goes wrong, stop. Take a breath. Think about which way to turn. You have the right to correct the driving track (but you cannot drive out past the lines).
  • Second chance: If you hit a cone or drive past the line – that's the end (unless it's the first attempt, then you have a second try). If only the engine stalls – you have a second attempt.

Remember: the arc is geometry. There are no surprises here. If you practice and stay calm, you will pass it swimmingly.
