How long should you continue to give chest compressions and artificial respiration in a person with a cardiac arrest?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be performed continuously. It may only be stopped when the emergency services arrive and take over, the casualty shows signs of life (e.g., normal breathing, movement), or the rescuer becomes exhausted. Stopping resuscitation too early drastically reduces the casualty's chances of survival.
