How should you secure a victim of an open limb fracture?

Correct immobilisation of a broken limb, as in the situation shown in the illustration, requires the stabilisation of two adjacent joints – the one above and the one below the site of the fracture. Such a procedure prevents the movement of bone fragments, which minimises the risk of additional damage to tissues and nerves and reduces the casualty's pain.
