The dashboard of a modern car can light up like a Christmas tree. Some symbols are obvious, others (like the famous "helicopter") arouse terror. The key to understanding is... color.

Hierarchy of colors

It's like traffic lights:

1. Color RED – STOP / DANGER

If a red light turns on while driving: Stop immediately (in a safe place) and turn off the engine. Further driving threatens destroying the car or accident.

  • Exclamation mark in circle (Brake system): It could be handbrake pulled (phew!), but also lack of brake fluid (no brakes!).
  • Oil can (Oil pressure): Lack of engine lubrication. A few minutes of driving and engine for replacement (seizure).
  • Battery (Charging): Alternator is not charging. Power will run out soon, car will die (often power steering also stops working).
  • Thermometer (Fluid temperature): Engine is overheating. Threatens head gasket failure.

2. Color YELLOW / ORANGE – WARNING

"Something is wrong, check it at service, but you can continue driving (carefully)".

  • Check Engine (Engine/Helicopter): Error in engine control, lambda probe etc. Car might have less power, burn more fuel.
  • ABS / ESP: Safety systems not working. Brakes will work, but wheels might lock during sharp braking.
  • Pump (Fuel reserve): You know this. Refuel.
  • Bulb: Burnt out bulb.

3. Color GREEN / BLUE – INFORMATION

"Everything ok, this system is on".

  • Dipped/Position lights (Green).
  • Indicators (Green).
  • High beam (BLUE): This is the only blue light. Reminds you that you are blinding others.

What you need to know on the exam?

The examiner won't ask you about "Check Engine", but you must know lights related to initial maintenance:

  • If after turning the key lights (e.g., airbag, ABS) don't go out – report it to the examiner! Driving a faulty car is forbidden.
  • If you forget to release the handbrake, car will beep and shine red light (!) – that's a mistake on the exam.
  • If you don't close the door, open door light will shine. Make sure it went out before moving off.

Treat warning lights seriously. It is an early warning system that can save your wallet and health.
