During braking, engine braking should be used for as long as possible, as it assists the action of the service brakes. Depressing the clutch pedal (the pedal on the left) too early disengages the engine from the wheels, resulting in the loss of this braking force. Therefore, the clutch pedal should only be depressed in the final stage of braking, to prevent the engine from juddering or stalling when its speed drops below the minimum for the selected gear.
