A trailing switch has a mechanism that allows it to be set automatically by the pressure of the tram's wheel flanges. When a tram travels over such a switch from the direction of the converging tracks, which occurs when reversing, its blades are pushed aside and automatically set themselves in the correct position, enabling safe passage. For this reason, intervention by the tram driver is not necessary in this situation.
