What might cause a chipped insert of pantograph's graphite?

A chipped graphite insert loses its smooth surface, preventing it from sliding smoothly along the overhead contact wire. Its uneven surface causes snagging and jerking of the wire as the vehicle moves. These irregular forces and vibrations are transferred to the overhead line system, causing it to sway, which in extreme cases can even result in damage.
