Before starting to overtake, it is crucial to ensure you have the best possible view of the road ahead of the vehicle you are overtaking. Driving too close ("tailgating") restricts your field of vision and makes it impossible to assess whether another vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction. By maintaining a greater distance, you gain a better angle to observe the oncoming lane and more time to make a safe decision to start the manoeuvre, in accordance with the requirements of Art. 24 para. 1 of the Road Traffic Act.
