What effect can a chipping of the pantograph's graphite inserts induce?

The graphite insert (slider) of the pantograph must have a smooth surface to ensure a smooth slide along the contact wire of the overhead line system. Any chipping or damage causes the insert to catch on the wire, which induces its violent vibrations and oscillation. In extreme cases, the forces acting on the overhead line may lead to its rupture.
