In pneumatic braking systems, such as those used in heavy goods vehicles, the parking brake is as a rule a spring brake. Its braking force comes from the mechanical pressure of a very strong spring, which applies the brakes. Air pressure in the system is used to release this clamp, and its drop – whether intentional or due to an emergency – causes the brake to engage.
