Every driver is required to constantly observe the situation on the road, including not only the road ahead of the vehicle but also behind it, using the mirrors. This is particularly important on a motorway, where due to high speeds, the traffic situation changes very dynamically. Such observation allows for the early detection of potential hazards and a safe reaction, even when not intending to change lane or direction of travel.
