What should you do before you check the oil level in the engine?

To obtain a correct and reliable reading, the engine must first be switched off. It is then necessary to wait a few minutes to allow the oil, which is circulated throughout the lubrication system while the engine is running, to drain back into the oil sump. Taking the measurement on a running or recently switched-off engine would give a low, incorrect reading.
